Marcello is the kind of painter who begins with a general idea and then allows the painting to take form as he paints it. He does draw each element out first, but not the entire canvas (or panel in this case.) So what began as a study of vegetables from the market including the funny eggplant at center, then becomes also a landscape which unexpectedly gets populated by monuments from the center of Florence. His imagination is always free to go where it will. Self-taught painters often maintain that spontaneous openness which we all had as children when we drew and painted.
