"This painting of Maryam was one of my first oil portraits. I never got around to finishing the top she was wearing but in a way I quite like this unfinished look. It allows the canvas to breathe as the paint is purposefully thin in the background and in the dark side of her face. She gazes up towards the window, creating beautiful light in and around her eyes."
