This is a copy of a painting entitled “Maternità” by Roberto Ferruzzi (1853-1934) which was exhibited in the Venice Biennale of 1897. The original is lost but many reproductions exist, with varying titles from Gypsy Woman to Virgin and Child. The Madonna is also known the world over as “The Star of the Sea” which is why one often sees a star on her blue mantle. Here it is a glow-in-the dark, three-dimensional element applied to the canvas.
